28/11/2013, 6:00 p.m. - 08:00 p.m.: Dr.Cobus van Staden: CCTV in Africa – How Chinese Television Reports About Africa

The last two years have seen the rapid expansion of Chinese media on the African continent. The foremost example of this expansion has been China Central Television’s move into the African media market. This expansion hasn’t only taken the form of the broadcast of Chinese content to African audiences, but also the creation of new African content. This was the result of CCTV’s new production facilities in Nairobi. But how does CCTV address its new African audience? And how effectively is it competing with other news services emanating from the West and Africa itself? This paper will give a glimpse of CCTV’s portrayal of African society in its new African service, and how it has tried to find a place in the burgeoning African media market.

Dr. Cobus van Staden is a lecturer in media studies at the University of the Witwatersrand's School of Literature, Language and Media
