Parliamentary debates in African countries provide historical and contemporary insights into perceptions and reactions of political elites to relations with Asian countries. This paper focuses on debates of Tanzania‘s parliament regarding China especially how China is perceived; attitudes towards Chinese migration, investment and quality of goods and services amongst others. The role of Tazara (Tanzania-Zambia Railway) as a transnational site of memory and how this shapes transnational and local memory politics discourses will be analysed.

Dr. des. John Njenga Karugia is a Postdoctoral Researcher at AFRASO at Goethe University Frankfurt where is also a lecturer. He has conducted intensive research on China-Africa relations from a transnational and translocal persepctive with research work in East Africa, China and USA. Currently, he focusses on Asia-Africa relations, especially on the Indian Ocean. He received his PhD from the University of Leipzig.
